Martins Point Plantation on Wadmalaw Island is a private 900 acre community on the Wadmalaw River and the Intracoastal Waterway. A conservation easement with the Lowcountry Open Land Trust preserves the rural character of the historic plantation, scenic vistas, water quality, wildlife habitat and open space. The Wadmalaw River is a gateway to the 350,000 acre ACE Basin, a pristine estuarine sanctuary. A private boat ramp provides private access to the Wadmalaw River, Wadmalaw Sound, the ACE Basin and the Atlantic Ocean, nine miles downriver. Three islands in the Wadmalaw River are set aside as a preserve. A 40 acre Pond Preserve is managed for waterfowl, wading birds, redfish, crabs and shrimp. Several miles of trails and sandy roads through woods and fields along the marsh are ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Sensible covenants and architectural guidelines preserve the long-term value of the 43 homesites from 3 to 15 acres. Eighteen homes are built. For more than 100 years, Martins Point Plantation was the center of agricultural commerce on Wadmalaw Island and had its own currency, store and school. The island telephone system and post office were located at the plantation house where crops and people were ferried to the mainland from a private landing. The historic waterfront cemetery is a reminder of plantation history. This site features old growth live oaks, hardwoods and pines and approximately 4 acres of open pasture. Additional pasture is available.
